Should be a great series.

TLR

Good Morning,

I absolutely LOVE Monday mornings! Why? For me Monday’s represent a new beginning, a fresh start, an opportunity to proactively and prayerfully plan/discern how the next 7 days will be leveraged for the Glory of God.

Many of you have asked ‘how do you do ‘IT’, Brent’? Well, let me start by saying that there is no ‘ONE’ way to do ‘IT’, but there are some principles & processes that I live by that have become convictions of mine over the past decade. This week I am going to share a few with you.

Time Log Report (TLR):

Every Monday morning, one of the first things I do once I’m in the office is compile a Time Log Report (TLR) from the previous week. This has become a spiritually significant discipline for me. The TLR process forces me to take an honest look into the mirror and ask some hard questions.

  • How many hours did I work last week? Too few …too many?
  • What did I (actually) accomplish with the hours I worked last week?

For me there is nothing more frustrating than looking back at the end of a day or week, scratching my head and wondering:

  • I’m exhausted. I feel like I worked WAY too much (today/this week) and I’m not sure I can tell you WHAT I actually accomplished?
  • I feel like I ‘punched the clock’, but were lives ACTUALLY impacted for Jesus through the hours I worked?

For years I asked these questions on a regular basis, and it almost ‘burned me out’ of ministry had I not developed a system/process to intentionally and regularly evaluate not only HOW I was working, but WHAT I was actually accomplishing.

‘It’s not about working harder, its about working smarter’

Every week I give copies of my TLR to both Ray & David. This has been LIFE CHANGING for me. Both Ray and David proactively exhort me to either ‘watch it’ with my tendency to log too many hours, or encourage me that I am modeling a healthy work/personal lifestyle.

I ‘NEED’ this accountability; I ‘DESIRE’ this feedback, I ‘LONG’ to submit myself to authority. Why? Because too much is on the line for me (or you) to burnout or flameout.

Another added benefit to the TLR reporting process is that it sets me up to proactively and strategically set my weekly, bi-monthly, monthly & quarterly projects & goals. I will be talking more about HOW I do this in future emails.

OK, that’s it for today. I hope you have found this email insightful and possibly challenging. Please pause now for a moment and ask the Lord for HIS guidance and agenda for the remainder of this day, week & month.

Grace & Peace,

Brent Deffenbacher
